Who governs pickleball in India?

The official recognition record

The Ministry’s 2025 recognised-NSF list names the Indian Pickleball Association. That supports the narrow and important statement that the IPA appeared on the Ministry’s list for that year. Readers should avoid expanding that statement into claims about every tournament, player, club or historic organisation without separate evidence.

The IPA describes itself as responsible for national rankings, sanctioned tournaments and player development. Its own site publishes tournament and ranking material, membership information and state/club affiliation claims. Those are useful records of the IPA’s programme and should be attributed to the IPA.

Where AIPA fits

The All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) describes itself as a not-for-profit association formed in 2008 and publishes its own tournament, rules and ranking-policy material. Its ranking policy states that the ranking applies to players affiliated to the relevant state associations and AIPA. That makes it a separate, identifiable competition and ranking system in the public record reviewed for this guide.

We have not found an official Ministry record in the sources reviewed that makes AIPA’s published rankings interchangeable with IPA rankings, or vice versa. A reader should therefore identify the issuing body before describing a ranking as national, official or universally applicable.

What sanctioning means in practice

“Sanctioned” should be read as a relationship between an event and the body whose rules, entry conditions and points system it uses. An organiser may publish an event, but the relevant questions are: who is named as the sanctioning body; what points system applies; whether player membership is required; and where the event’s official rules, draw, results and refund terms appear.

An event’s quality or legitimacy cannot be determined from sanctioning language alone. Conversely, an event not listed in a particular association’s system may still take place. The honest description is specific: “IPA-sanctioned”, “AIPA ranking event”, or “organiser-run event”, where the source supports it.

How to read rankings

A ranking is only meaningful within its stated system. Before relying on one for selection, seeding, eligibility or player comparison, check the issuer, category, date, point allocation, included events and player-registration requirements. Do not assume a ranking shown on one association’s site is a combined national table unless the publisher explains and evidences that method.

What players should check before entering

1. Event organiser and sanctioning: read the event page and registration terms, rather than relying on a poster or repost.
2. Rules and format: establish the rulebook, age/category criteria, format and any equipment requirements.
3. Ranking consequences: identify the named points system and whether membership, a player ID or a state affiliation is required.
4. Money and remedies: check published entry fees, prize-money terms, refund policy and the organiser’s contact route.
5. Results record: look for an official draw, results page or issuer-published ranking update after the event.

What remains unclear

India does not yet have a single public, independently auditable database connecting every association, club, player registration, tournament, draw and ranking system. We will not infer a combined player population, participation count or unified national ranking from parallel first-party records. This page will be updated when an official rule, recognition record or published system materially changes.
